Steering gear is one of the auxiliary machinery and important
equipment on board the ship. The steering gear functions to help the ship
turn left (port side) and right (starboard side) by moving the rudder (rudder).
In operation, the steering gear contained in MV. Manalagi Asta has a leak
through a gap in the rudder shaft which causes seawater to overflow to fill
the steering gear room and if it is not stopped immediately it can damage the
auxiliary machinery around the area. This study aims to determine the
factors that cause leaks in gland packing installation, the impact caused if
leaks in gland packing installation are not repaired immediately, and to
provide information to readers about efforts to overcome the problem of
leaking gland packing installation on the steering gear engine at
MV.Manalagi Asta.
This study uses a research method, namely SHEL (Software,
Hardware, Environment, and Liveware.) and FISHBONE. The model of this
method relates to and relates between human factors and surrounding
environmental resources. The SHEL method is to determine the factors,
impacts and effort factors of non-optimal Steering Gear work.
The results of the study show that the factors that cause leakage in
the installation of gland packing on the steering gear machine are the use of
inappropriate materials in covering or wrapping the rudder shaft. The impact
arising from a leak in the installation of the gland gasket on the steering gear
machine is the overflow of seawater which can cause damage to the
auxiliary machinery in the area if it is not repaired immediately. Efforts are
being made to stop the leakage of the gland packing installation immediately
by carrying out temporary repairs so that the leak does not continue and
drain the overflow of sea water so that it does not cause damage to the
machinery around the area and cause a loss in repair costs and ship
operational time. All of that will be discussed by researchers in this thesis.
