Inert Gas System is a system that can produce inert gas on tankers.
This system has the purpose of regulating the atmosphere in the cargo tank
to avoid the risk of fire and explosion. Inspection and maintenance of the
components of the Inert Gas System must be carried out regulary so that
the operation can be optimal. The purpose of this research is to determine
the maintenance problem of the Inert Gas System on MT. Gamalama, to
find out the consequences that occur if the Inert Gas System is not optimal,
and to find out efforts to optimize the Inert Gas System during cargo
handling on MT.Gamalama.
This research is a qualitative descriptive study. Data is collected by
conducting direct observations in the field, interviews were conducted
with the Captain, Chief Officer, Second Officer, and Pumpman to obtain
information about the maintenance process and trouble on the Inert Gas
System, and documentation in the form of photographs of Inert Gas
System maintenance activities as well as documents regarding reports that
have been made in writing by ship officers on MT. Gamalama. Data
processing techniques using triangulation.
The maintenance problem of the Inert Gas System are the lack of
knowledge and understanding of the crew, poor coordination and
communication among the crew members, lack of discipline in the Inert
Gas System maintenance and the unavailability of equipment to be used in
the maintenance and repair of Inert Gas System components. The
problems led to delays in the cargo handling process and there is a risk of
fire and explosion hazards in cargo tanks. To optimize the Inert Gas
System, we should carry out regulary drill, improving good coordination
between the crews, carry out inspections and maintenance of components
according to the Planned Maintenance System, and completing equipment
that will be used in the maintenance and repair of the Inert Gas System.
