ABSTRACT

The Evaluation of Teaching Media Used During Online ESP Teaching in The
Time of Covid-19 Pandemic: A Case Study on the Maritime English Classes
of The Nautical Studies Department at Politeknik Ilmu Pelayaran
(PIP) Semarang

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought significant changes in the education
sector. Education institutions have been forced to switch from conventional faceto-face
teaching
and
learning
into
online
teaching
and
learning.

This
research
was

aimed
to
evaluate
the
teaching
media
used
by
lecturers
during
online
ESP
teaching

and
learning
from
the
students’
and
the
lecturers’
points
of
view.
There
were
three

main
teaching
media
evaluated
in
this
study:
the
e-learning
platform
developed
by

the

institution, the video-conferencing applications, and YouTube as a videosharing
platform.

The research was conducted on the Maritime English classes of the Nautical
Studies department at Politeknik Ilmu Pelayaran (PIP) Semarang. A case study was
used as the strategy of inquiry in which the researchers observed the teaching and
learning activities and analyzed the teaching media used. 195 students of the
Nautical Studies Department of PIP Semarang who were in the 1

semester of the academic year 2020/2021 were involved to complete a
questionnaire. Twelve of them were asked to join a Focus Group Interview to
obtain more detailed and comprehensive answers. Two English teachers who
taught Maritime English for Nautical Studies Department were also involved in an
interview.
The research revealed that from the students’ and lecturers’ point of view, the
e-learning platform is a useful tool that can support them during online teaching
and learning. However, some students admitted that they needed more explanation
from the lecturers to help them understand the materials and the instructions. This
can be facilitated by the use of the video-conferencing application and YouTube
videos. Nevertheless, students’ poor internet connection has caused obstacles for
them to get the best online learning experience and has impacted the teaching and
learning process.
