Steering gear is one of the necessary equipment in the ship, serves to help
ships turn to the left (port side) and right (starboard side). According to SOLAS,
1974, steering gear should be able to rotate the rudder from 35º right to 30º left or
vice versa within 28 seconds. To move the rudder, steering gear requires hydraulic
pressure enough. In operation, the steering gear is leaking hydraulic oil thus
affecting the performance of the operation of the steering gear.
In order for the safety and smoothness in motion if the ship is not impaired or
component damage is more severe, then in this paper, the authors use the method
approach strengths, weaknesses, opportunities , threats, (SWOT) analysis is a form
of situation analysis by identifying various factors systematically against strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities , threats of a problem. method used in analyzing.
After doing research using SWOT analysis, known impacts and risks as well
as the cause of the hydraulic oil leak in the steering gear. Therefore, it is necessary
to encourage risk control makes the operation of the steering gear does not affect all
of the disadvantages that steering gear becomes normal again. All that will be
discussed in this paper the authors.
