PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is a work equipment that must be worn by crew in vessel with the aim to reduce the impact of existing work hazards. Knowledge, skills and understanding of the use of PPE must be owned by crew on board. Explanation of accidents on board due to carelessness in work that can caused crew performance decreased. The purpose of observation is to know the cause of nondiscipline crew using PPE while working on board MV. Sinar Sumba. This study also aims to determine the level of supervision of officers about the use of PPE and the purpose of the obligation to use PPE on board MV. Sinar Sumba.
In this minithesis the author uses qualitative descriptive method that contains the exposure, description and explanation of an object and take conclusions in general. And using method of USG (Urgency, Seriousness, Growth) to produce priority problems in the object observed. In other way, data collection is done by interview, observing and taking documentation directly in the form of photos/video of a work accident on board MV. Sinar Sumba.
The results of the observation showed that the human error factor, especially about awareness and discipline of crew in using PPE when working on the ship is still low, due to lack of knowledge, skills and understanding of importance using PPE for each crew on board. Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that the safety meeting has been done on board and the importance understanding to use PPE by crew when working on board. Captains and ship officers should be able to improve the discipline of work and always supervise, reprimand the crew who do not apply using of PPE well and hold safety meetings every week a regulary that the crew understands correctly the duties and responsibilities on board so that the impact can be anticipated.
