The object of this book is to prepare students for the general engineering knowledge part of the certificates of competency for marine engineering officers, issued by flag state administrations, of which the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) is responsible in the United Kingdom. The engineering certificates issued by the the different flags states are designed against the criteria determined by the International Maritime Organization (IMO)
